John's Final Decision

At the end of Brave New World, John kills himself.  His motives are thought-provoking.

When John arrived in London with Bernard, he had high hopes of the brave new world Linda had told him about.  When he got there, he was disappointed in the way the people lived.  He was similar to Bernard in this sense: he didn't approve of how promiscuous people were.  He didn't like that people didn't have feelings.  He didn't like that everybody's mind was controlled and that nobody dealt with their problems.

At the end, when John tries to stay away from the civilization he despises, he joins them in a night filled with soma and chants of "orgy porgy".  John is so ashamed for becoming part of what he despises that he decides to kill himself.  I find it a bit ironic that John thought that people should deal with their problems and not use soma, but he himself can't bring himself to deal with his biggest problem and he decided to "solve" his problem by killing himself.  This thought came across my mind when I finished the story.  What do you think John could have done differently?  Was is it really too much to deal with?
